Description

Supermarkets have a constant surplus of heat that originates from the refrigerators in the shop and in the cooled storage facilities. That exhaust heat is normally transmitted to the outside air by heat exchanges. Doepel Strijkers Architects propose to use that energy to heat apartments. Aquifers are used to buffer supply and demand.

Description of the Process

REAP (abbreviation for Rotterdamse EnergieAanpak en -Planning; Rotterdam EnergyApproch and -Planning) compiles a set of tools for sustainable urban planning on different scales. The main difference to other planning strategies is the reuse of existing (energy)flows.
Decisions about the quality and the quantity of program to be added (or removed), are taken based on the mapping of the existing situation.

Cooling products in a supermarket results in a constant surplus of warmth. This existing flow, that is normally wasted, can easily be used to heat apartments.
The total size of apartments to be added is calculated from the ratio of the energy flows. Every square meter of supermarket can support 7m2 of real estate.
By adding underground storage facilities for warmth and cold, the seasonal fluctuation can be balanced.

The extended shopping mall in the Zuidplein cluster can supply an additional 665 apartments.
